This is the one where I posts several clips of music and you identify the ones you know; unlike the last time I did it, I'm not restricting whether or not they may have singing.

The clips are here (note: extracts to the current directory!). I'll update this post as they're guessed.

The ones that have been guessed are:
03: Simon and Garfunkel - Bookends theme ([info]sleepsong)
05: Loreena Mckennitt - Caravanserai ([info]sleepsong)
06: Robyn Miller - Catherine's Freedom (from Riven) ([info]gaussjordan)
07: REM - Driver 8 ([info]betaphen)
10: Beatles - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away ([info]sleepsong)
13: Carbon Leaf - Toy Soldiers ([info]rbraun)

...03 has an id3 tag, and there is no 13.

07 is rem's driver 8, and that's all i recognize.

Gah; silly having two different ways of tagging. I removed one! It should be fixed now (and what was previously 16 is now 13; that one was the fault of me getting a shell command a bit wrong). Thanks for pointing it out!

07 is indeed Driver 8.

I think that 06 is from the computer game Riven.

15. The song is called "Rant and Roar" and the version I have is by Great Big Sea, but this is not Great Big Sea.

10. "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" - The Beatles

5. "Caravanserie" - Loreena McKennitt

3. "Bookends" - Simon and Garfunkel

The song in #15 kind of borrows bits from a few other songs. The lyrics at the beginning are from a traditional song, on which "Rant and Roar" seems to be based, but the rest of the lyrics in the clip are different from either that song or GBS' "Rant and Roar".

The other three are correct!

I must admit I didn't listen very far into 15. I just heard the words and thought, "Hey, that's not the right band..."

I ♥♥♥ Loreena McKennitt. She is heavenly.

P.S. What software did you use just to make clips of songs? I would love to do this meme, only I do not know how to make clips as opposed to just posting whole songs.

Audacity. It's free, it runs on Windows, MacOS, and Linux, and it's great for simple sound editing like this.

Wow... I have very little, though I do like the sound of a number of them.

#2 sounds like something in German, but that's not enough for identification :-)

If I had to guess purely by impressions, I'd say that #9 is the Trans-Siberian Orchestra playing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," though I don't know if such a recording exists.

i'd say more like "toccata en fugue" than "god rest ye merry gentlemen" (based on the part at the end), but i've _heard_ tso's toccata, and i don't remember it sounding like that.

I'd say #1 sounds even more like something in German... :)

If there were a prize for the most interesting (but incorrect) guess, I think your guess (and Chris') for #9 would get it! :)

argh, a few of them had familiar artists, but i couldn't get any that haven't already been gotten.

when 00 is guessed (or you give up), you should enable me to acquire it; i like it lots.

argh 14 is clearly vnv or someone who sounds a heck of a lot like them (which isn't altogether impossible)... why do i know know this song?

In retrospect, I probably should have included some of the vocals... those are about the only way to distinguish some of the bands :).

Just to add to the mystery, though: you've probably heard a slightly different mix of the same song (I played it at least once at a cluster rave), and you've probably seen the lyrics to it. You've also had a copy of the other mix for several months now, but you might not know it! :)
